Dental Anesthesiology Externships
The Dental Anesthesiology Externship at Jacobi Medical Center offers dental students the opportunity to observe and experience the unique environment of a hospital-based dental anesthesiology residency. Externs gain valuable insight into whether this specialty—and our program specifically—is the right fit for them.
The externship is strictly observational; there is no hands-on component. Participants will observe anesthesia care across a variety of clinical settings and are encouraged to engage with residents and attending anesthesiologists. Externs are invited to ask questions, participate in case discussions, and experience the collaborative learning environment that defines our program.

Scheduling and Eligibility
Externships are open to candidates who are actively applying to dental anesthesiology residency programs in the current application cycle.

Due to high demand and limited availability, we do not schedule externs before December of their application year.

For example:
A candidate planning to apply in September 2026 (for residency starting July 2027) may extern beginning December 2025.

Externships take place Monday through Friday only (externs are not permitted on weekends, holidays, or overnight shifts.)
Typical duration is 1–5 consecutive days within a single week, space permitting. Most externs attend for 2–3 days.

Please note:
-
Externships are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
-
All required forms must be submitted at least two weeks in advance; most externs secure their spots several months ahead.
-
Externships are not confirmed until written confirmation is received from the program.
-
Please do not make travel or housing arrangements until your dates are confirmed.
-
No externs are scheduled during the last two weeks of June or the first three weeks of July.
-
Availability in late July, August, and early September is extremely limited. Externships may be planned for these periods, but confirmation depends on early communication and program capacity.
