General Description

The North Bronx Healthcare Network (NBHN) is one of six regional networks established by the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation in 1994 to improve patient care and better respond to community needs. NBHN consists of Jacobi Medical Center (JMC), North Central Bronx Hospital (NCB) and affiliated community health care centers.

NBHN is the sole public provider of health care services in the North Bronx, with an annual average of:

  • 35,400 inpatient discharges
  • 162,000 emergency visits
  • 558,500 outpatient visits
  • 4,300 ambulatory surgery visits.

Both JMC and NCB have large, active pediatric services that provide care to children from a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. NBHN is recognized by the communities it serves as a socially responsible, experienced provider of health care for vulnerable populations - medically underserved, uninsured, Medicaid/Medicare recipients and uniformed services personnel.

NBHN is a major academic affiliate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM), with the majority of its physicians appointed to the AECOM faculty.

The Pediatric Dental Program at NBHN is a two-year program commencing July 1st each year. It is a hospital-based postgraduate program. The application deadline is October 15 of the year preceding matriculation. All applicants must be graduates of an accredited U.S. or Canadian dental school. The program participates in both the post-doctoral application support service (PASS) and the postdoctoral dental matching program.

This program is designed to prepare pediatric dentists for clinical practice in both private and hospital settings, with an emphasis on a public health approach to oral health.

Curriculum

Pediatric dental residents receive their education through daily seminars, hospital rotations, grand rounds presentations and continuing education courses. Off-service hospital rotations include Anesthesia, Ambulatory Pediatrics, In-patient Pediatrics and Emergency Department. There is also a rotation to the Rose F. Kennedy Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. This rotation provides clinical experience in providing care to individuals with a range of developmental disabilities.

Lectures are provided in pediatric restorative dentistry, growth and development, orthodontics, preventive practices, sedation techniques, pharmacology, oral pathology, pulp therapy, pediatric periodontal issues, public health, practice management, biostatistics, and special patient care. Treatment planning seminars and literature review are also integral components of the didactic curriculum.

Residents are expected to develop their own case presentations, as well as assigned presentations in other areas. The ability to be comfortable with public speaking is a necessity for any professional who aims to become an effective advocate in the area of children's health.
