The faculty of the program is comprised of 5 full time equivalent Board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery faculty, three based at Jacobi and two at Beth Israel. Additionally, other non OMFS faculty such as orthodontists, prosthodontists, and faculty from anesthesia and pain management, Head and neck surgery, radiation and medical oncology, pathology, plastic and reconstructive surgery and speech pathology departments will also participate in the teaching and clinical training of the OMFS residents.
Daniel Buchbinder, DMD, MD Program Director and Director of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center Dr. Buchbinder is a graduate of the University of Montreal School of Dental Medicine (DMD) and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MD). He received his training in oral, maxillofacial surgery from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral, Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Buchbinder is the former chairman of the department of dentistry and oral, maxillofacial surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is currently professor and chief of the division of maxillofacial surgery, department of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center and Continuum Cancer Centers of New York where he is also the director of the post-graduate maxillofacial surgery training program. Dr. Buchbinder has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles and has lectured extensively on cranio-maxillofacial trauma management, reconstruction and the use of osseointegration. He is a member of the multidisciplinary team at the Institute for Head and Neck and Thyroid Cancer and serves on the board of directors and the scientific advisory board for the Thyroid and Head and Neck Cancer (THANC) Foundation. Dr. Buchbinder also serves as chairman of the mandible expert group of the AO technical commission as well as the board of trustees of the AO ASIF foundation, a non-profit organization based on a network of surgeons who are committed to the study, practice, and teaching of AO principles and their advancement in the field of trauma and musculoskeletal surgery. |
Arthur Adamo, DDS – Director of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at NBHN Dr. Adamo graduated from the University of Vermont with a BA degree in 1957 and then received his DDS degree from Georgetown University School of Dental Medicine in 1961. He completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at Long Island Jewish/Queens General Hospital in 1966. Dr Adamo was a Captain in the USAF and was stationed as an oral surgeon in Japan for two years. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is an Associate Professor, Department of Dentistry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In 1977 he was appointed a Fellow in the American College of Dentists. Dr Adamo has published 25 scientific articles and received the 2007 Daniel M. Laskin Award for co-authoring the most outstanding paper published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery during 2006. He also received the Doctor of the Year Award for Jacobi Medical Center in 2006. Dr. Adamo was the co-founder of the Jacobi CSI (Cranio-maxillofacial Surgical Institute) which plans and treats patients with Head and Neck trauma and pathology in conjunction with the departments of otolaryngology, plastic surgery, neurosurgery and ophthalmology. For recreation “chef arturo” enjoys cooking Italian cuisine and being with his wife, Andrea and their four beautiful grandchildren.

Benn Lieberman, DMD – Director of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at North Central Bronx Hospital Dr. Benn L. Lieberman, D.M.D., is currently part- time faculty of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at Beth Israel Medical Center/ Jacobi Medical Center/ Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his undergraduate education at Tufts University, and also received his doctorate in dental medicine (DMD) from Tufts. Following dental school Dr. Lieberman completed his training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Westchester Medical Center / New York Medical College. After a short period in private practice, Dr. Lieberman came to Jacobi Medical Center. He was eventually named the Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at North Central Bronx Hospital. In 2009 he opened a private practice in Mt. Kisco, New York and now dedicates three days per week to resident education. His interests include the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with an emphasis on dental implants, adult and pediatric out-patient anesthesia, trauma surgery, and correction of dentofacial deformities. He holds staff appointments at Jacobi Medical Center, North Central Bronx Hospital and Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Lieberman is Board Certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Alan Schwimmer, DDS – Attending Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. Schwimmer has been an attending Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Beth Israel Medical Center since 1978. During that time he has served as Associate Director of the Department of Dental Medicine as well as the Director of the Dental Residency Program. He is now an attending Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in the Department of Otolaryngology. He is an Associate Professor of Dentistry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Schwimmer was one of the first Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in the United States to utilize rigid internal fixation for the treatment of maxillofacial injuries. Dr. Schwimmer's interests include the management of temporomandibular joint disorders and dental implant reconstruction of the jaws including cases that require bone grafting. He has extensive experience in the management of maxillofacial injuries as well as the treatment maxillofacial jaw deformities. Dr. Schwimmer maintains an active oral surgery practice at Philips Ambulatory Care Center as a member of the Department of Otolaryngology.

Jason Portnof, DMD, MD – Attending Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. Jason E. Portnof, D.M.D., M.D. is currently full time faculty of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at Beth Israel Medical Center/ Jacobi Medical Center/ Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his undergraduate education at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and received his doctorate in dental medicine (DMD) from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. His medical school training (MD) was completed at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery and an internship in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/ Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Portnof completed a fellowship in pediatric maxillofacial surgery/ craniomaxillofacial surgery in the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. His interests include the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with an emphasis on correction of dentofacial deformities, orthognathic and maxillofacial reconstructive surgery, Temporomandibular joint reconstructive surgery, oral and maxillofacial pathology, cosmetic facial surgery, and complex dental implantology. Dr. Portnof has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and presented both nationally and internationally.

Barry Langsam, DDS - Attending, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Barry W. Langsam graduated from University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry 1962. He became a resident in Oral Surgery at BMHC (Jacobi) from 1962 - 1965. He has been in private practice in New Rochelle, New York since that time. He is Director of Dentistry and Chief of Oral Surgery at Sound Shore Medical Center, New Rochelle, New York. Barry is the Director of the two year Dental Anesthesia Program at Jacobi Hospital and is an attending in Oral Maxilofacial Surgery. He is the Chief of Section of Oral Surgery and Out Patient Anesthesia at the Rose F. Kennedy Center, Albert Einstein/Montifiore Hospital Medical Centers. Dr. Langsam has had articles published on Dental Implantology. |
Joseph Marged, DDS – Attending, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. Elvin Joseph Marged was born and raised in Philadelphia where he graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry. After spending two years as a dentist in the United States Air Force he completed a residency in Oral and Maxilofacial Surgery at St. Lukes Hospital Center in New York. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is the recipient of the John H. Kolmer award in Medicine. Throughout his career of over forty years he has maintained a private practice in Queens and has been involved in residency training programs in several of the local hospitals.He is the former chief of Oral Surgery at both Jamaica Hospital Center and New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens. His special interests are in the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders. Dr. Marged was a co-director of the “Center for the Diagnosis of Craniofacial Pain” in Long Island. In his spare time he likes to travel and play golf. |
David Sheinkopf, DDS – Attending, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. David Sheinkopf graduated from University College of Arts & Sciences of New York University at University Heights with a Bachelor of Science degree and then completed a DDS degree from the School of Dentistry at West Virginia University. After graduation from West Virginia, Dr. Sheinkopf completed a two year general practice residency at Sydenham Hospital in New York, NY (now part of the Harlem Hospital residency program). He then came to Jacobi Medical Center for an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency. Following completion of his OMFS residency, Dr. Sheinkopf was asked to join the private practice of Dr. William Rakower (then Chief of the Division of Dentistry and Co-Chief of the Section of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Jacobi) in Manhattan. Dr. Sheinkopf has been in that practice since 1977 and is now the senior surgeon. In addition to board certification in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Sheinkopf is an Assistant Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and also on the staff of Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Sheinkopf has been a Voluntary Attending in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery since completion of his residency in 1977. In 2006, he began devoting more time to teaching and now is involved with teaching residents three days a week. Dr. Sheinkopf met his wife, Shelley, a radiologist, when they were both residents at Jacobi. In addition to travel, his interests include collecting antique American scales and ice cream scoops. |
Tasios Vakkas, DDS, MD – Attending, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. Vakkas graduated with honors from the Columbia University School of Dental Medicine, DDS. He continued his postdoctoral education and training at the University of Maryland. Dr. Vakkas received his MD after graduating from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He went on to complete an internship in General Surgery. His Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training was very rigorous and included operating at the renowned R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Dr. Vakkas is both a licensed dentist and physician and holds board certification from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is actively involved in resident and student education and training and is a published author. He also holds a position as Assistant Clinical Professor at Columbia University. He has lectured extensively in regional dental societies. His clinical interests include implant surgery, orthognathic corrective jaw surgery, benign pathology, trauma, and reconstruction of the maxillofacial region. He maintains a practice in Yorktown Heights, NY and has been selected by his peers as a “Best Dentist” in Westchester County for Westchester Magazine two years in a row.

Timothy Leung, DMD, MD - Attending, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. Timothy Leung is a graduate of the University of Toronto School of Public Health (MPH), the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Weill Cornell Medical College (MD). He received training in oral and maxillofacial surgery and general surgery from the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident in the department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Leung currently practices oral surgery in Toronto, Ontario and New York, NY. His interests include the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with an emphasis on dental implantology, dentoalveolar surgery, office based anesthesia, temporomandibular disorders and orthognathic/corrective jaw surgery. In his free time, Dr. Leung enjoys spending time with his wife and baby daughter. He enjoys golf, basketball, and traveling.

Myron Gurman, DDS - Director of Orthodontics, Jacobi Medical Center Dr. Gurman is a graduate of New York University College of Dentistry. Following dental school , Dr. Gurman served as a Captain in the US Army Dental Corps stationed in Germany for two years. His post graduate education in orthodontics was also completed at NYU College of Dentistry. While in private practice for over 40 years Dr. Gurman taught in various institutions including Montefiore Medical Center, St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn & Queens, Albert Einstein College of Medicine & Jacobi Medical Center. His specific field of expertise is concentrated on Orthognathic Surgery cases. He is now Director of Orthodontics at Jacobi & North Central Bronx Hospitals. He also works with the Pediatric Dental Residency Program at Jacobi Hospital supervising Interceptive Orthodontics to young children. In his free time (an oxymoron), Dr. “G” enjoys boating, fishing, skiing, photography, reading & yielding to his addiction as a crossword puzzle addict. |
Kenneth Cooperman, DMD - Attending Orthodontist, Jacobi Medical Center Dr. Kenneth Cooperman has been practicing dentistry since 1995, and has specialized in orthodontics since 2000. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991, from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1995, and then spent the following year in Seattle at the University of Washington. There, he did a one-year hospital-based residency treating medically compromised dental patients in one of the foremost transplant centers in the United States. Seattle is a great place to live, so Dr. Cooperman stayed there for over two years practicing general dentistry. He returned to New York in 1998 to begin his specialty residency in orthodontics at New York University. Dr. Cooperman is a member of a number of respected professional organizations including the American Association of Orthodontists, the New York State Society of Orthodontists, the Northeast Society of Orthodontists, the Bronx County Dental Society, the First District Dental Society, the American Dental Association, and the New York State Dental Association, among others. He practices in the Bronx and in Manhattan.
In his free time Dr. Cooperman enjoys cooking, reading, running, traveling, and spending time with his family. He runs so much because he also really likes to eat. |
Maggie Mintzberg, DDS - Attending Orthodontist, Jacobi Medical Center Dr. Maggie Mintzberg was born and raised in Brazil, where she attended the American School of Rio de Janeiro. She came to New York City in 1997 to attend college at Columbia University where she majored in Neurosciences and Behavior. Dr. Mintzberg went on to complete her dental degree at Columbia University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Mintzberg then completed a two year postgraduate program at the NYU School of Dentistry to receive her orthodontic specialty certification. Dr. Mintzberg is an active member of a number of respected professional organizations including the American Association of Orthodontists, the New York County Dental Society and the American Association of Women Dentists, among others. Dr. Mintzberg is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish. |
Beth Boguslaw, DMD - Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Jacobi Medical Center Dr. Beth Boguslaw is currently part-time faculty in the Department of Dentistry and Department of Pathology at Jacobi Medical Center, and Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center. She received a BS in nutrition from Cornell University in 1976, and graduated from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1980. Dr. Boguslaw did a residency in general practice at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens, N.Y., and then went on to finish an oral pathology residency at Oral Pathology Laboratory in Flushing, N.Y. She then did a one year fellowship in general pathology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Her responsibilities now include lecturing the residents in oral pathology, diagnosing the oral biopsies, and seeing oral medicine patients. |
